Incoming fabric inspection helps prevent defects from reaching the cutting room. The 4-point system is a practical method for scoring visible defects consistently across polyester rolls.
How the System Works
Visible defects are assigned one to four penalty points according to defect size. The total is then related to the inspected fabric area, allowing rolls of different widths and lengths to be compared. The buyer or factory must define its own acceptance limit.
Typical Scoring
- Up to 3 inches: 1 point
- Over 3 to 6 inches: 2 points
- Over 6 to 9 inches: 3 points
- Over 9 inches: 4 points
Holes and openings should be scored according to the agreed inspection rule.
Inspection Procedure
- Verify roll number, lot, shade and declared length.
- Inspect under suitable lighting at controlled speed.
- Mark every defect location.
- Record width, shade and dimensional issues separately.
- Calculate total defect points against inspected area.
- Segregate rolls outside acceptance limits.
What the 4-Point System Does Not Replace
It should not replace shade control, GSM checks, shrinkage tests, bow/skew measurement or performance testing. A roll can have a low point score and still be unsuitable because of colour or dimensional variation.
Final Thoughts
The 4-point system works best when defect maps and roll identity are carried forward into cutting. That turns inspection data into practical production control.
