Polyester is dimensionally stable compared with many fibres, but repeated tumble drying still exposes garments to heat, movement and friction. Over time, these conditions can change fabric performance.
What Happens During Tumble Drying?
Garments repeatedly tumble against the drum while warm air removes moisture. The combined heat and mechanical action can relax fabric structure, affect finishes and increase surface wear.
Possible Changes
- Small dimensional changes
- Changes in fabric thickness
- Surface fuzz or shine
- Altered softness or hand feel
- Reduced performance of some finishes
Why Heat Setting Matters
Properly heat-set polyester is generally more stable, but poor thermal history or mixed constructions can still show movement after repeated drying. Polyester-Lycra fabrics may also respond differently from 100% polyester.
Why One Cycle Is Not Enough
A garment may look unchanged after one wash and dry cycle but gradually change after five, ten or more cycles. Durability testing should reflect the expected care pattern of the final product.
Buyer Checks
Measure garment or fabric dimensions before and after repeated cycles. Also evaluate GSM, thickness, surface appearance and hand feel. Use the same wash and drying conditions for every comparison.
Final Thoughts
Tumble drying performance is part of real consumer use. Buyers should test repeated cycles when the garment is expected to be machine dried regularly.
